SUMMARY:Signboard Workshop: Red Wing Blackbird
DESCRIPTION:Paint your fall signboard before the air cools! Bring your favorite beverage and snacks if you wish\, as we paint our signboards together\, step by step. We provide a template for the bird and the cattail perch\, so no drawing skills are necessary! Our seasonal signboards are a great front door welcome for your home! See our holiday signboards in a smaller\, coordinating board– a Halloween/Thanksgiving design is coming soon! Our signboards are double-sided\, giving the option to return to our studio at another seasonal workshop to paint the other side. See Project Description below for more details! Tickets must be purchased in advance and are limited to 8\, in order to maintain comfortable working space for the signboards. Ages 18+ please! \n$120Project Description: This is a four hour workshop with short intermittent breaks. The boards are 4 ft x 18 in. Acrylic paint is used with various brushes\, sponges and rags. We have aprons\, but keep in mind this paint does not wash out of clothes. We provide gloves as an option\, as it can get a little messy for some parts of the process. The boards are propped up off the floor about 2 feet and a stool is provided\, but expect some bending and reaching. There’s usually enough room to lay it across the table if necessary.   IF YOU ARE RETURNING WITH A SIGNBOARD-– typically\, we need time to prep the boards in advance\, but this design requires no prepping. SUMMARY:Loon in Water-Mixable Oil Paint
DESCRIPTION:Paint a loon in water-mixable oil paint. It doesn’t sound possible\, but Winsor and Newton has a line of oil paint that is able to be thinned with water\, yet offers much of the same qualities as oil paint. This paint is easy to use thinned down to get the soft\, blended look so characteristic of oil paint. For more details\, read project description below.   Ages 18+ for this class please! \n$50 \nProject Description: 12×16  stretched canvas    Water Mixable Oil Paint    We will begin our painting with the loon\, water and upper sky with a black under-painting with acrylic. The rest of the painting is done with thinned water-mixable oil paint over the top. With W.M. Oil\, It is surprisingly easy to add the colors and white dots when the loon is already black!\nBecause we are using a thinned-down technique\, it doesn’t take as long to dry as usual. This is a 3 hour workshop with a focus on learning rather than our regular paint-along classes. All supplies are provided\, but you may bring any of your own favorite watercolor paints\, brushes or paper. We will be practicing on Strathmore 400 Series cold press 140 lb paper. This workshop is designed for adults and teens ages 16+\, of beginner level. If you’ve dabbled with watercolor and struggle to “let go” of tight detail control\, or have always wanted to try watercolor–this is the class for you! Techniques and subjects covered may include\, but not limited to\, the images shown. Learn how to start a painting when you have painters block\, and practice “seeing” in shapes and patterns to develop your subject. Learn how to let watercolor do what it does best. DESCRIPTION:Learn how to paint mountains and trees in a similar technique as a certain well-known painter— the one with the hair! Once upon a time\, Sara took the classes as a teenager in the back aisles of a Ben Franklin\, which sparked a love of painting\, and eventually a degree in studio art. This is Sara’s version of painting with his brush and paint knife techniques with acrylic paint\, rather than oil. This is a later-beginner level painting\, but first timers are always welcome. SUMMARY:Watercolor Workshop: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes
DESCRIPTION:Ever look at a watercolor painting and think\, how did they do that? This workshop is a must for anyone who’s always wondered and wanted to try.  While each artist develops their own touch\, there are techniques every aspiring painter needs to know. \n\nIn this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple landscape.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. Ages 16+ please! \n$60-see Ticket Policy Below. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, she teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  While she enjoys teaching\, she seeks time-out to paint in the studio or outdoors. Sara struggles to isolate a single medium as a favorite. She finds enjoyment in the freedom to grab whatever medium suits her mood. This results in a variety of classes for Kicks!  In addition to teaching\,  Sara shows original works for sale at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \nHigh quality synthetic sable brushes are most recommended\, but substitutes will do. Select options designated for water color painting.  Here are some suggestions and what I will be using: \n\nPointed Rounds in #’s 4\, 8\, & 10. Try to bring at least 2 different sizes.\nFlat brush ranging from 1/2 in to 1 in width.\nScript Liner brush or a rigger brush for finer lines and details.\n\nWatercolor Paint Tubes:  I prefer to use Winsor & Newton’s professional grade line\, but I also use some student grade paints such as Grumbacher Academy or Windsor & Newton’s Cotman series. They work OK. Our main focus will be brush strokes\, but you will need a variety of colors. The colors you need depend on your subject. For my Highlander Cow\, I will be using the following: \nAt minimum: Burnt Sienna\, Raw Sienna (or Yellow Ochre)\,  Ultramarine Blue\, Quinacridone Magenta\,  Sap Green\, Cadmium Yellow light\, Payne’s Grey\, Lamp Black \nHelpful for less mixing: Raw Umber\, Violet \nOPTIONAL:  Other colors I use often:  Prussian Blue\, Permanent Rose\, Quinacridone Gold\, Cerulean Blue\, Cobalt blue\,  Lemon Yellow\, \nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, good quality paper will cause less frustration. You want 140 pound\, cold press paper. Arches Cold Press is most recommended. I have used Strathmore’s 400 series and it works OK\, but at least avoid hot press paper for this class.  If you don’t want to buy an entire block of Arches paper\,  you can buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! SUMMARY:Paint a Puppy with Sara
DESCRIPTION:SCHOOL IS OUT! Calling all kids and teens 12+ let’s have some fun! Adults–feel free to join us in this paint and sip style class. An outline of the puppy is pre-drawn in advance\, so no drawing skills are necessary. While the outline is merely a guideline\, we will stay together as a group\, step by step. Painters are free to make any adjustments to make it their own. Skip the tongue or make his ears droop a little differently… it’s all up to you! This class will have an option to finish earlier\, or stay a little longer to add the extra details\, such as textured fur and additional highlights for those who want to take it to the next level. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the beauty of the blossoming trees minus the allergies!  Sara paints with you\, step by step\,  a charming\, storybook scene of an old tire swing under a tree in its full bloom. This painting offers us some intermediate level opportunities\, yet is easily simplified for the beginner! For the intermediate painter\, learn how to paint layers of land with a path leading to the swing\, giving us that illusion of space and distance. A simplified version removes the extra land\, and simplifies the foreground. Try new brush techniques with Sara to create all the various shades of pink in the tree. SUMMARY:Paint the Northern Lights in Water Mixable Oil Paint
DESCRIPTION:Many Minnesotans saw the Northern Lights this past November\, and some captured beautiful photos of the reds and greens. Why not try your hand at painting them? If you’ve never tried water-mixable oil\, you’re in for a real treat!  “Water-Mixable Oil” sounds like an oxymoron! This paint offers the benefits of oil paint with the easy clean up of soap and water instead of paint thinner. While acrylic paint dries quickly\, limiting the paint’s ability to blend smoothly\, this paint remains wet like traditional oil paint\, allowing for beautiful blending that oil painters love. We take advantage of this “open paint time” to create the glowing streaks of color in the sky and snow that looks as soft as a blanket. As usual\, this is a paint and sip style class\, so enjoy a hot beverage on us\, or bring you own favorite beverage or snack. Allow for a full 3 hours\, and prepare to leave with a tacky-wet painting. We recommend hanging your painting on a nail out of reach and just enjoy looking at it while it dries. Drying time varies with humidity levels and paint thickness. Faster than traditional oil paint\, thin layers of this paint can be dry to the touch within hours to a few days\, thicker layers can take several days to a week or more.
