DESCRIPTION:Transform a simple stencil into a work of art! Many people know how to use multiple colors and gradations in a stencil\, but you can take it a step further and use it as a painting guide. Sara will show how the design of stencils\, with their positive and negative spaces\, provide the information needed to “fill in the blanks.” With our adorable blue bird stencil on a wooden heart\, and “crust medium” by Paint Couture\, Sara will show you how to make your one of a kind wall art with a raised\, textured finish. You will be able to work at your own level\, creating the look you want. These wooden hearts have two sides\, one smooth and one with “planks’. We have chosen the smooth side for this project and have another class that paints the other side in a patriotic theme. So watch website and social media for that class to return! DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how to paint loosely with watercolor for that “effortless” look? Try the tricks of the trade with local artist\, Sara Porter\, as your instructor. With demonstrations and one-on-one assistance\, this is a hands-on experience that will open up your painting to a whole new world! This is a 3 hour workshop with a focus on learning rather than our regular paint-along classes. All supplies are provided\, but you may bring any of your own favorite watercolor paints\, brushes or paper. We will be practicing on Strathmore 400 Series cold press 140 lb paper. This workshop is designed for adults and teens ages 16+\, of beginner level. If you’ve dabbled with watercolor and struggle to “let go” of tight detail control\, or have always wanted to try watercolor–this is the class for you! Techniques and subjects covered may include\, but not limited to\, the images shown. Learn how to start a painting when you have painters block\, and practice “seeing” in shapes and patterns to develop your subject. Learn how to let watercolor do what it does best. SUMMARY:Watercolor Jellyfish: Paint and Sip
DESCRIPTION:Who says a paint and sip always has to be in acrylic paint? Watercolor can be just as fun! Jellyfish are the perfect\, organic shape to paint– they are literal “blobs.”  There are no drawing skills needed to paint a blob\, and no templates needed.   The secret is water.  Two hours is plenty of time to watch a demonstration and try it yourself a few times before making your own. Come to have fun\, bring your favorite beverage and snacks\, and we’ll have coffee and tea available. This isn’t an intense “class”\, although\, we like those too. This is a fun paint and sip!  If you really want to learn more techniques\, take a look at the workshop the Wednesday night before! NOTE:  If you attended the workshop on the previous Wednesday night\, receive $10 off of this class!  (You are not required to attend the workshop to come to this event\,) All materials are provided! We use student grade paper to practice\, and then will switch to ARCHES professional watercolor paper for your final jellyfish at an 8×10 size.  Your painting will turn out even better on professional grade paper. DESCRIPTION:A great introduction to watercolor painting\, this step by step class- paint and sip (anything) style- is sure to sell you on watercolor paint!  No need to worry about drawing skills! The outline of the flamingos’ heads\, necks\, and legs is available to transfer onto your paper if you wish. The most fun is in the fluffy bodies. See what watercolor paint can do with very little effort\, making you look like a pro!   This class is geared towards adults but open to teens as young as 13.  Painters younger than 16 will need to fill out a registration form with a guardian’s signature at the class.  Bring your own favorite beverage\, otherwise\, we have coffee\, tea or cocoa available. SUMMARY:Watercolor: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple florals.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, Sara offers private lessons and teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  In addition to teaching\, Sara shows original works for sale on her gallery wall at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. When she isn’t immersed in an art related project\, she enjoys the piano\, singing\, and spending time with her family\, which has a new grandbaby to enjoy! You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \n\nSara will be using the following types of brushes in synthetic sable or brushes designated as “watercolor”:   2-3 Pointed Rounds in sizes 4\, 8 & 10\, 2 flat brushes in 1/2″ and 1 inch for larger washes\, a script liner brush or small pointed round\, or rigger. Optional: A rake brush will also be demonstrated\, you are welcome to try Sara’s if you don’t have your own. These sizes are approximate\, you do not need to have these exact sizes.\nSara will be using watercolor paint from tubes (either dry or fresh from the tube)\, but a good-quality pan set also works well. Brands include but not limited to Winsor and Newton (Cotman series) and Grumbacher.  Master’s Touch is acceptable\, available at Hobby Lobby\, but you will want to avoid the cheapest brands marketed more for children’s use.  We will most likely be using the following colors: Lemon Yellow\, Yellow Ochre\, Burnt Sienna\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cobalt Blue\, Prussian Blue\, Cadmium Red Deep\, Permanent Rose (or Quinacridone Magenta or Rose) Dioxazine Purple (or similar violet)  Sap Green\, Vandyke Brown\n\nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, Strathmore’s 500 series is recommended over other student-grade paper. Their 400 series is available at Michaels\, but you don’t want to go lower in quality than that.  Regardless\, it’s a good idea to buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! SUMMARY:Bees and Flowers: Watercolor Paint and Sip
DESCRIPTION:Whimsical Bumblebees hover over purple flowers in this loosely painted watercolor. This painting class is geared towards anyone who has had some practice with watercolor\, which is why we are offering $10 off for anyone who attended the workshop prior to this class on Wednesday the 12th!  The workshop is NOT required to attend this event! We will spend time practicing the techniques before painting our bumblebees.  Watch the water do most of the work and you suddenly have cute\, fluffy bees. All materials are provided for this class\, but if you have your own\, you are welcome to bring them!  Don’t forget to bring a favorite beverage and snack if you wish!
