SUMMARY:Paint a Puppy with Sara
DESCRIPTION:SCHOOL IS OUT! Calling all kids and teens 12+ let’s have some fun! Adults–feel free to join us in this paint and sip style class. An outline of the puppy is pre-drawn in advance\, so no drawing skills are necessary. While the outline is merely a guideline\, we will stay together as a group\, step by step. Painters are free to make any adjustments to make it their own. Skip the tongue or make his ears droop a little differently… it’s all up to you! This class will have an option to finish earlier\, or stay a little longer to add the extra details\, such as textured fur and additional highlights for those who want to take it to the next level. It really depends on your preference (and attention span)  🙂  )    Class time line is approximate. Bring your own favorite beverage and treats to sip/munch while you paint. SUMMARY:Watercolor Workshop: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes
DESCRIPTION:Ever look at a watercolor painting and think\, how did they do that? This workshop is a must for anyone who’s always wondered and wanted to try.  While each artist develops their own touch\, there are techniques every aspiring painter needs to know. \n\nIn this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple landscape.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. Ages 16+ please! \n$60-see Ticket Policy Below. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, she teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  While she enjoys teaching\, she seeks time-out to paint in the studio or outdoors. Sara struggles to isolate a single medium as a favorite. She finds enjoyment in the freedom to grab whatever medium suits her mood. This results in a variety of classes for Kicks!  In addition to teaching\,  Sara shows original works for sale at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \nHigh quality synthetic sable brushes are most recommended\, but substitutes will do. Select options designated for water color painting.  Here are some suggestions and what I will be using: \n\nPointed Rounds in #’s 4\, 8\, & 10. Try to bring at least 2 different sizes.\nFlat brush ranging from 1/2 in to 1 in width.\nScript Liner brush or a rigger brush for finer lines and details.\n\nWatercolor Paint Tubes:  I prefer to use Winsor & Newton’s professional grade line\, but I also use some student grade paints such as Grumbacher Academy or Windsor & Newton’s Cotman series. They work OK. Our main focus will be brush strokes\, but you will need a variety of colors. The colors you need depend on your subject. For my Highlander Cow\, I will be using the following: \nAt minimum: Burnt Sienna\, Raw Sienna (or Yellow Ochre)\,  Ultramarine Blue\, Quinacridone Magenta\,  Sap Green\, Cadmium Yellow light\, Payne’s Grey\, Lamp Black \nHelpful for less mixing: Raw Umber\, Violet \nOPTIONAL:  Other colors I use often:  Prussian Blue\, Permanent Rose\, Quinacridone Gold\, Cerulean Blue\, Cobalt blue\,  Lemon Yellow\, \nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, good quality paper will cause less frustration. You want 140 pound\, cold press paper. Arches Cold Press is most recommended. I have used Strathmore’s 400 series and it works OK\, but at least avoid hot press paper for this class.  If you don’t want to buy an entire block of Arches paper\,  you can buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! DESCRIPTION:If the father in your life is a fisherman\, here’s an option for you.  Consider painting The Bobber for him or scheduling quality time painting together! The Bobber has been very popular on our large\, wooden boards\, but we also offer it on this 10×20 stretch canvas. Text on the Bobber is completely optional and not necessary to have a complete painting\, but you are welcome to add your name to the Bobber or special order a name added afterwards at an additional cost. This class is designed to be paint and sip style\, with no experience necessary. Bring your own beverage/treats\, or enjoy a coffee or tea on us!  Ages 16+ is recommended for this painting. SUMMARY:Loon in Water-Mixable Oil Paint and Sip
DESCRIPTION:Did you know black paint out of the tube alone can make a subject look flat and lifeless? Using a dark blue or dark purple in place of black is a striking effect and very beautiful. You’re likely to achieve more depth and much more interest. Now\, look at that contrast against the orange sky!  Complimentary colors doing what they do best–making each other look great. \nThis year\, during the Loon Festival\, we are going to paint this loon design\, like last year\, but with twist. This loon sample was painted in acrylic\, with a transparent\, watery affect over permanent black line. We are going to do the same color scheme\, the same loon\, but with water-mixable oil paint. It doesn’t sound possible\, but Winsor and Newton have a line of oil paint that is able to be diluted and washed with water\, yet offers much of the same qualities as oil paint.When used thinned down\, we can get transparent layers\, but also the soft\, buttery look so characteristic of oil paint.   One of the benefits of using water-mixable oil thinned down\, is that it doesn’t take quite as long to dry as usual. But still plan to leave with a sticky painting. Keep it hanging on a wall out of reach until it is at least dry to the touch. Some of the painting will be thicker than other areas\, and so some areas will dry sooner than others.   Ages 18+ for this class please! \n$50 \nProject Description: 12×16  stretched canvas    Water Mixable Oil Paint     You will transfer the outline onto your canvas with transfer paper\, than outline it with permanent marker before proceeding with the paint layers.  Dripping effects are entirely optional. The results will be somewhat similar to this loon\, but with richer tones and more brush stroke effects. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance!
