SUMMARY:Painting with Paper Workshop: Honey Bee
DESCRIPTION:The term “painting with paper” was first associated with artist Henry Matisse\, who would say he was “drawing with scissors.”  Since then\, paper has become much more prevalent in the world of fine art.  Since the scrap booking trend hit the scene\, we have had access to thousands of colors and patterns. Now\, mixed media art combines all the possibilities of wet and dry media into fabulous works of art. This workshop explores the endless possibilities of torn paper with a variety of materials\, including: paint\, texture applications\, stamps\, ink\, fabric/textiles.  A template of a honey bee will be used to create a “painting” out of paper. Local artist\, Sara Porter\, will demonstrate and provide hands on instruction in making a Mixed Media Honey Bee work of art. This is a two-day workshop\, Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th\, from 6-8 pm.  Space is LIMITED for this unique workshop\, so do not wait to get your ticket! The deadline to sign up is Monday night\, the 17th\, at 8 pm. See project description for more details on each night. \nAges 16+ Required \n$90 (covers both evenings\, not able to be separated) \nProject Description: \nWednesday\, Aug 19:    It all begins with creating a world for your honey bee to live in. We will spend this first night on the background and the various techniques used to create texture in a dynamic composition. Demonstrations and instructions will cover topics such as: creating a composition that’s nice to look at\, how to choose a color scheme\,  how much “stuff:” is too much\,  texture applications\, using stamps\, ink\, and paint\, the power of text in your composition\, and how to use value (lights and darks) to your advantage.   That might sound complicated\, but even if you don’t understand everything\, you”ll have our assistance and you’ll have fun “playing” with all the “stuff.”    The instructions from this first night are important to establish your overall plan for what you will do on the 2nd night. Whatever you don’t finish on Wednesday\, you will continue where you left off on Thursday.  Wet media may include: acrylic paint\, modge podge\, glue\, and ink stamps. Tools: scissors\, sandpaper\, paint brushes\, sponges\, rags\, and your hands! \nThursday\, Aug 20:  Prepare yourself for a bit of creative chaos.  It will look like art exploded in the room. And that’s partly what’s so FUN about mixed media!  We will be creating our honey bees with torn paper\, textiles and a template. Watch Sara demonstrate how she selects her colors and tears the paper to use torn edges\, which gives a “soft” effect to the image. You will have the option to make more than one bee if there’s time. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! Ticket sales close at 8PM two nights before. Last minute inquiries\, call to check on availability. \n*Class minimum: 4 \n*In the event of not reaching the minimum\, class is subject to cancellation. \n*Cancellations by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund. \n

DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to join us for a TWO DAY watercolor workshop with guest artist\, Paul Oman\, of Drawn to the Word\, Paul Oman Fine Art\, LLC.   (Option to attend first day only) Subjects covered: Lakes\, skies\, reflections\, trees\, birch trees and their characteristic bark and curls\, sunsets\, the cabin at the lake\, loons and more. Paul’s easy way of demonstrating will allow you to both further explore your current level of familiarity in painting\, and take next steps to challenge and grow your vision to see new possibilities. \nDates: Thursday and Friday\, September 25-26  Time: 10a-2p both days.  Cost: $75 one day;  $145 both days   (See Ticket Policy bottom of page)   Purchase your ticket from the Day One’s page description. \nDay 2 participants will create their own painting to take home. Option to mat your painting at the end of day 2. \nBring your own reference photos and painting supplies. (suggested list of supplies included below) \nSandwich lunch provided or BYO \n  \nMeet the artist:      A native of Amery\, Wisconsin\, Paul is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and a Bold Brush International competition finalist for his watercolors. Painting since he was ten years of age\, Paul works full-time using his artistic abilities to bring hope\, inspiration\, and joy to the lives of others through art and its creative processes. He works in watercolor\, acrylic\, and oil. Founder of Drawn to the Word in 2011\, Paul paints large-scale canvases with high visual impact before audiences around the world. Paul lives near Deer Park\, Wisconsin with his wife\, Jana. They have three children. \nWebsites: www.paulomanfineart.com   www.drawn-to-the-word.com   Email: paul@paulomanfineart.com  FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/DrawnToTheWordPaulOmanFineArt \nSuggested List of Materials \nPaul’s List of Materials:  \nI have listed materials that I use. You do not have to purchase these particular materials if you already have your own. Substitutes will do. \nPaints: I use Windsor $ Newton professional grade tube paints. There are several brands of professional grade watercolor paint available which are equally as good. Quality student grade watercolors (e.g. Academy [Grumbacher] or Cotman [Windsor & Newton] work OK and are less expensive. \nRecommended Colors:  Cadmium Yellow Light or Windsor Yellow\, Raw Sienna\, Raw Umber\, Burnt Sienna\, Alizarin Crimson\, French Ultramarine\, Cobalt Blue\, Cerulean Blue. \nAdditional Colors:  (not necessary but lots of fun!): Cadmium Red\, Permanent Rose\, Permanent Sap Green\, Quinacridone Gold\, Paynes Gray\, Permanent White Goauche. \nPainting Palette:      I use a John Pike painting palette. However\, any palette which has a larger-sized mixing area or areas is good. \nBrushes:     A variety of brushes will work. Here are some I use: \nFlats ranging from 1/2 to 2 in width. \nRounds\, #’s 6\, 8 & 10 \nA script brush (also called a rigger) for fine line detail. \nWatercolor Paper:       There are many papers you can buy. Your most cost-efficient means would be to buy a tablet of high quality watercolor paper. I prefer 140 pound Arches Cold Press or Rough paper\, either sheets or blocks (stack of paper glued together on the edges). Whatever paper you buy\, I strongly suggest you do NOT get a paper that has a shiny appearance to the surface. These can be very frustrating to paint on. In my opinion\, it is worth every penny to buy a higher quality paper so you can experience success. \nSomething to Put Your Paper On:     You will need a flat surface on which to place and/or fasten your paper\, such as a piece of plywood or tile board\, and a 2-3 in prop for under your board (wood block or book\, etc. ). \nOther Supplies that are helpful (*=required): \n*masking tape (I use this to tape my paper to the board) \n*#2 or softer pencil \n*kneaded eraser \n*sketch pad \n*sunglasses (helps to see values quickly) \nArt Masking Fluid (not necessary) \nSpray bottle for water (very helpful) \nsalt \nsponge \nWhere to get your supplies: \n1. I highly recommend Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff. They specialize in watercolor supplies. You can find them on-line at www.cheapjoes.com or give them a call at 1-800-227-2788. This is where I order my supplies and I have been completely satisfied for years. \n2. Another quality place is Art Supply Warehouse\, www.aswexpress.com  or 1-800-995-6778. \n3. Dick Blick Art Supplies. \n4. Michaels Craft Stores \n5. Amazon.com \nKicks the Art Place Ticket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Register in advance! Registration closes at 8PM the night before. Last minute registrants\, call to check on availability. \n*We reserve the right to require a registration minimum; classes are subject to change. \n*Any cancellation by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Apple Stand: Intermediate Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Apple Stand is an intermediate level painting inspired by the many apple orchards in Minnesota we all love. With this being a longer workshop\, we will take a short break halfway through. There will be an outline on the canvas\, so not to worry about drawing skills!   We couldn’t possibly paint this without some cider to sip\, so help yourself to our cider\, hot cocoa\, or coffee\, etc. We welcome our painters to sip and snack while they paint! These classes are step-by-step\, following along with our instructor.    Acrylic paint on an 11×14 canvas      Ages 18+ please! \n$60 \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Register in advance! Registration closes at 8PM the night before. Last minute registrants\, call to check on availability. \n*We reserve the right to require a registration minimum; classes are subject to change. \n*Any cancellation by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund.
