SUMMARY:Transform Your Stencils: Bluebirds
DESCRIPTION:Transform a simple stencil into a work of art!  Many people know how to use multiple colors and gradations in a stencil\, but you can take it a step further and use it as a painting guide. Sara will show how the design of stencils\, with their positive and negative spaces\, provide the information needed to “fill in the blanks.” With our adorable blue bird stencil on a wooden heart\, and “crust medium” by Paint Couture\, Sara will show you how to make your one of a kind wall art with a raised\, textured finish. You will be able to work at your own level\, creating the look you want.  These wooden hearts have two sides\, one smooth and one with “planks’. We have chosen the smooth side for this project\, and will be offering a class to paint the other side in the near future. So watch website and social media!   Space is limited to only EIGHT\, so don’t wait to sign up! Ages 16+ please for this workshop. \n$65 \nProject description:  We will first paint the wooden heart in acrylic paint\, either like the sample or your own version. Sara will demonstrate the various techniques and crust medium by Paint Couture\, followed by a step by step process as a class. Additional hanging hardware can be added to the top with rope or ribbon for hanging. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! Ticket sales close at 8PM the night before. Last minute inquiries\, call to check on availability. \n*Class minimum: 4 \n*In the event of not reaching the minimum\, class is subject to cancellation. \n*Cancellations by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund.

SUMMARY:Watercolor Workshop: Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes
DESCRIPTION:**Postponed! Sara has a grand baby on the way that may interrupt this class! This class will be rescheduled.  Exciting times! \nIn this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple landscape.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. Ages 16+ please! \n$60-see Ticket Policy Below. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, she teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  While she enjoys teaching\, she seeks time out to paint in the studio or outdoors. Sara struggles to isolate a single medium as a favorite. She finds enjoyment in the freedom to grab whatever medium suits her mood. This results in a variety of classes for Kicks!  In addition to teaching\,  Sara shows original works for sale on her gallery wall at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \nBefore you begin your search: Quality over Quantity is key. However\, the price range on paint brushes varies dramatically from a few dollars to nearly $100 or more.  It isn’t necessary to spend a fortune\, but you will experience the best results possible in this class with artist-quality materials. I (Sara) will be demonstrating in brushes made of synthetic sable or similar.  A brush in synthetic squirrel or Gold Taklon will behave differently. Try to find synthetic sable or a comparable version such as Princeton’s Velvetouch series.   I recommended tubes or pans in Winsor & Newton or a close alternative: Grumbacher Academy.  You can purchase the colors individually or in a set. Michaels has sales periodically.  The most important material you will bring is the PAPER.  The brand most widely used by artists and required by art schools is the Arches series. The minimum criteria: 100% cotton\, cold-pressed\, 140 pound\, and acid-free. \nHigh quality synthetic sable brushes such as Princeton’s Aqua Elite and Heritage lines are recommended for lower cost without sacrificing longevity and quality. Look for Princeton’s Velvetouch series or Winsor Newton & Cotman for a close\, budget-friendly alternative. \n\n2-3 Pointed Rounds such as this Princeton Aqua Elite in  #4 and #8 and  #12: (at least one larger and one smaller)  https://www.michaels.com/product/princeton-aqua-elite-synthetic-round-watercolor-brush-10553033 or Winsor Newton Cotman: https://www.michaels.com/product/winsor-newton-cotman-round-brush-10368012\nFlat brush such as Princeton Aqua Elite in 1/2″ or 3/4″: https://www.michaels.com/product/princeton-aqua-elite-synthetic-stroke-watercolor-brush-10553039 or the 1/2″ velvetouch version: https://www.michaels.com/product/princeton-velvetouch-series-3950-wash-brush-10658646\nScript Liner brush or small pointed round as this #1 Princeton Aqua Elite: https://www.michaels.com/product/princeton-aqua-elite-synthetic-liner-watercolor-brush-10553024   Or a small pointed round such as this #1 in velvetouch: https://www.michaels.com/product/princeton-velvetouch-series-3950-round-brush-10658641\n\nWatercolor Paint Tubes:  Winsor & Newton is a great brand. This is a great starter set\, however not all these colors are mandatory: https://www.michaels.com/product/winsor-newton-cotman-water-colours-10-color-paint-set-10636594?michaelsStore=5507&inv=3\   Try to bring at least these colors: Lemon Yellow\, Burnt Sienna\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cadmium Red Deep\, Permanent Rose (or Quinacridone Magenta or Rose) Hookers Green \nOPTIONAL:  Add- on colors not included in the above set:  Payne’s Grey\, Prussian Blue\, Alizarin Crimson\, Yellow Ochre\, Pthalo Blue \nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, Strathmore’s 500 series is recommended over other student-grade paper. Their 400 series is available at Michaels\, but you don’t want to go lower in quality than that.  Regardless\, it’s a good idea to buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. Strathmore 500 series: https://www.michaels.com/product/strathmore-500-series-cold-press-ready-cut-watercolor-paper-D841196S?cm_mmc=PLASearch-_-google-_-18514200146-_-&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI5deshs-ikwMV4nF_AB31GCefEAQYAiABEgJOW_D_BwE&pla_channel=online&sku=D841196S&channel=online&local=&dev=c&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=18508163256 \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! Ticket sales close at 8PM two nights before. Last minute inquiries\, call to check on availability. \n*Class minimum: 4 \n*In the event of not reaching the minimum\, class is subject to cancellation. \n*Cancellations by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund. \n

SUMMARY:Snowman's Cardinal
DESCRIPTION:This snowman has had better days\, as he helplessly watches this cardinal steal thread from his scarf.  If you never tried painting with a pottery sponge\, you are in for a pleasant surprise! The entire background and body of this snowman is done with a pottery sponge\, resulting in a soft\, fluffy effect. We use transfer paper to apply the outline of the bird\, scarf\, hat and carrot.  You will have the option to put a smile on your snowman instead of the surprised expression\, and you can skip the pulling thread if you wish.  If you do opt for the thread\, we can help you by request– either by painting it for you or offering a brush tip marker in a coordinating color.   To achieve the depth of color in the scarf and bird\, we will be painting with 3 tones of paint\, starting with the darkest tone. Our instructor will guide you\, step by step\, to get the look!  Join us for a fun afternoon and bring home a snowman to add to your collection! We accept all skill levels. No experience necessary for this paint and sip style experience!  Enjoy a hot beverage on us\, or bring your own. Great option for a date night or girls’ night out! We’ve allotted 3 hours for this class to ensure enough time is given to finish the cardinal. Ages 16+ is recommended. \n$45 \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! Ticket sales close at 8PM the night before the event. Last minute inquiries\, call to check on availability. \n*Class minimum: 4 \n*In the event of not reaching the minimum\, class is subject to cancellation. \n*Cancellations by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund.

Paul’s easy way of demonstrating will allow you to both further explore your current level of familiarity in painting\, and take next steps to challenge and grow your vision to see new possibilities. \nDates: Thursday and Friday\, September 25-26  Time: 10a-2p both days.  Cost: $75 one day;  $145 both days   (See Ticket Policy bottom of page)   Purchase your ticket from the Day One’s page description. \nDay 2 participants will create their own painting to take home. Option to mat your painting at the end of day 2. \nBring your own reference photos and painting supplies. (suggested list of supplies included below) \nSandwich lunch provided or BYO \n  \nMeet the artist:      A native of Amery\, Wisconsin\, Paul is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and a Bold Brush International competition finalist for his watercolors. Painting since he was ten years of age\, Paul works full-time using his artistic abilities to bring hope\, inspiration\, and joy to the lives of others through art and its creative processes. He works in watercolor\, acrylic\, and oil. Founder of Drawn to the Word in 2011\, Paul paints large-scale canvases with high visual impact before audiences around the world. Paul lives near Deer Park\, Wisconsin with his wife\, Jana. They have three children. \nWebsites: www.paulomanfineart.com   www.drawn-to-the-word.com   Email: paul@paulomanfineart.com  FACEBOOK https://www.facebook.com/DrawnToTheWordPaulOmanFineArt \nSuggested List of Materials \nPaul’s List of Materials:  \nI have listed materials that I use. You do not have to purchase these particular materials if you already have your own. Substitutes will do. \nPaints: I use Windsor $ Newton professional grade tube paints. There are several brands of professional grade watercolor paint available which are equally as good. Quality student grade watercolors (e.g. Academy [Grumbacher] or Cotman [Windsor & Newton] work OK and are less expensive. \nRecommended Colors:  Cadmium Yellow Light or Windsor Yellow\, Raw Sienna\, Raw Umber\, Burnt Sienna\, Alizarin Crimson\, French Ultramarine\, Cobalt Blue\, Cerulean Blue. \nAdditional Colors:  (not necessary but lots of fun!): Cadmium Red\, Permanent Rose\, Permanent Sap Green\, Quinacridone Gold\, Paynes Gray\, Permanent White Goauche. \nPainting Palette:      I use a John Pike painting palette. However\, any palette which has a larger-sized mixing area or areas is good. \nBrushes:     A variety of brushes will work. Here are some I use: \nFlats ranging from 1/2 to 2 in width. \nRounds\, #’s 6\, 8 & 10 \nA script brush (also called a rigger) for fine line detail. \nWatercolor Paper:       There are many papers you can buy. Your most cost-efficient means would be to buy a tablet of high quality watercolor paper. I prefer 140 pound Arches Cold Press or Rough paper\, either sheets or blocks (stack of paper glued together on the edges). Whatever paper you buy\, I strongly suggest you do NOT get a paper that has a shiny appearance to the surface. These can be very frustrating to paint on. In my opinion\, it is worth every penny to buy a higher quality paper so you can experience success. \nSomething to Put Your Paper On:     You will need a flat surface on which to place and/or fasten your paper\, such as a piece of plywood or tile board\, and a 2-3 in prop for under your board (wood block or book\, etc. ). \nOther Supplies that are helpful (*=required): \n*masking tape (I use this to tape my paper to the board) \n*#2 or softer pencil \n*kneaded eraser \n*sketch pad \n*sunglasses (helps to see values quickly) \nArt Masking Fluid (not necessary) \nSpray bottle for water (very helpful) \nsalt \nsponge \nWhere to get your supplies: \n1. I highly recommend Cheap Joe’s Art Stuff. They specialize in watercolor supplies. You can find them on-line at www.cheapjoes.com or give them a call at 1-800-227-2788. This is where I order my supplies and I have been completely satisfied for years. \n2. Another quality place is Art Supply Warehouse\, www.aswexpress.com  or 1-800-995-6778. \n3. Dick Blick Art Supplies. \n4. Michaels Craft Stores \n5. Amazon.com \nKicks the Art Place Ticket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Register in advance! Registration closes at 8PM the night before. Last minute registrants\, call to check on availability. \n*We reserve the right to require a registration minimum; classes are subject to change. \n*Any cancellation by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
