DESCRIPTION:Whimsical Bumblebees hover over purple flowers in this loosely painted watercolor. This painting class is geared towards anyone who has had some practice with watercolor\, which is why we are offering $10 off for anyone who attended the workshop prior to this class on Wednesday the 12th!  The workshop is NOT required to attend this event! SUMMARY:Watercolor: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple florals.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, Sara offers private lessons and teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  In addition to teaching\, Sara shows original works for sale on her gallery wall at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. When she isn’t immersed in an art related project\, she enjoys the piano\, singing\, and spending time with her family\, which has a new grandbaby to enjoy! You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \n\nSara will be using the following types of brushes in synthetic sable or brushes designated as “watercolor”:   2-3 Pointed Rounds in sizes 4\, 8 & 10\, 2 flat brushes in 1/2″ and 1 inch for larger washes\, a script liner brush or small pointed round\, or rigger. Optional: A rake brush will also be demonstrated\, you are welcome to try Sara’s if you don’t have your own. These sizes are approximate\, you do not need to have these exact sizes.\nSara will be using watercolor paint from tubes (either dry or fresh from the tube)\, but a good-quality pan set also works well. Brands include but not limited to Winsor and Newton (Cotman series) and Grumbacher.  Master’s Touch is acceptable\, available at Hobby Lobby\, but you will want to avoid the cheapest brands marketed more for children’s use.  We will most likely be using the following colors: Lemon Yellow\, Yellow Ochre\, Burnt Sienna\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cobalt Blue\, Prussian Blue\, Cadmium Red Deep\, Permanent Rose (or Quinacridone Magenta or Rose) Dioxazine Purple (or similar violet)  Sap Green\, Vandyke Brown\n\nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, Strathmore’s 500 series is recommended over other student-grade paper. DESCRIPTION:Paint a loon in water-mixable oil paint. It doesn’t sound possible\, but Winsor and Newton has a line of oil paint that is able to be thinned with water\, yet offers much of the same qualities as oil paint. This paint is easy to use thinned down to get the soft\, blended look so characteristic of oil paint. For more details\, read project description below.   Ages 18+ for this class please! \n$50 \nProject Description: 12×16  stretched canvas    Water Mixable Oil Paint    We will begin our painting with the loon\, water and upper sky with a black under-painting with acrylic. The rest of the painting is done with thinned water-mixable oil paint over the top. With W.M. Oil\, It is surprisingly easy to add the colors and white dots when the loon is already black!\nBecause we are using a thinned-down technique\, it doesn’t take as long to dry as usual. SUMMARY:Watercolor Jellyfish: Paint and Sip
DESCRIPTION:Who says a paint and sip always has to be in acrylic paint? Watercolor can be just as fun! Jellyfish are the perfect\, organic shape to paint– they are literal “blobs.”  There are no drawing skills needed to paint a blob\, and no templates needed.   The secret is water.  Two hours is plenty of time to watch a demonstration and try it yourself a few times before making your own. Come to have fun\, bring your favorite beverage and snacks\, and we’ll have coffee and tea available. This isn’t an intense “class”\, although\, we like those too. This is a fun paint and sip!  If you really want to learn more techniques\, take a look at the workshop the Wednesday night before! DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how to paint loosely with watercolor for that “effortless” look? Try the tricks of the trade with local artist\, Sara Porter\, as your instructor. With demonstrations and one-on-one assistance\, this is a hands-on experience that will open up your painting to a whole new world! This is a 3 hour workshop with a focus on learning rather than our regular paint-along classes. However\, the price range on paint brushes varies dramatically from a few dollars to nearly $100 or more.  It isn’t necessary to spend a fortune\, but you will experience the best results possible in this class with artist-quality materials. I (Sara) will be demonstrating in brushes made of synthetic sable or similar.  A brush in synthetic squirrel or Gold Taklon will behave differently. Try to find synthetic sable or a comparable version such as Princeton’s Velvetouch series.   I recommended tubes or pans in Winsor & Newton or a close alternative: Grumbacher Academy.  You can purchase the colors individually or in a set. Michaels has sales periodically.  The most important material you will bring is the PAPER.  The brand most widely used by artists and required by art schools is the Arches series. The minimum criteria: 100% cotton\, cold-pressed\, 140 pound\, and acid-free. \nHigh quality synthetic sable brushes such as Princeton’s Aqua Elite and Heritage lines are recommended for lower cost without sacrificing longevity and quality. SUMMARY:Snowman's Cardinal
DESCRIPTION:This snowman has had better days\, as he helplessly watches this cardinal steal thread from his scarf.  If you never tried painting with a pottery sponge\, you are in for a pleasant surprise! The entire background and body of this snowman is done with a pottery sponge\, resulting in a soft\, fluffy effect. We use transfer paper to apply the outline of the bird\, scarf\, hat and carrot.  You will have the option to put a smile on your snowman instead of the surprised expression\, and you can skip the pulling thread if you wish.  If you do opt for the thread\, we can help you by request– either by painting it for you or offering a brush tip marker in a coordinating color.   To achieve the depth of color in the scarf and bird\, we will be painting with 3 tones of paint\, starting with the darkest tone. Your most cost-efficient means would be to buy a tablet of high quality watercolor paper. I prefer 140 pound Arches Cold Press or Rough paper\, either sheets or blocks (stack of paper glued together on the edges). Whatever paper you buy\, I strongly suggest you do NOT get a paper that has a shiny appearance to the surface. These can be very frustrating to paint on. In my opinion\, it is worth every penny to buy a higher quality paper so you can experience success. \nSomething to Put Your Paper On:     You will need a flat surface on which to place and/or fasten your paper\, such as a piece of plywood or tile board\, and a 2-3 in prop for under your board (wood block or book\, etc. ). \nOther Supplies that are helpful (*=required): \n*masking tape (I use this to tape my paper to the board) \n*#2 or softer pencil \n*kneaded eraser \n*sketch pad \n*sunglasses (helps to see values quickly) \nArt Masking Fluid (not necessary) \nSpray bottle for water (very helpful) \nsalt \nsponge \nWhere to get your supplies: \n1.
