DESCRIPTION:Inspired by a little white chapel from Sara’s childhood\, this painting is sure to bring up some cozy\, nostalgic vibes! An outline of the chapel and windows is prepared ahead of time\, so drawing skills are not required. This is a paint and sip style event. We provide coffee\, tea\, cocoa and cider\, or bring your own beverage and snacks. Sara implements techniques with sponges and spattering to help you achieve this snowy scene. We even paint with our fingers to get the desired effects of a glowing light in the windows. SUMMARY:Paint the Northern Lights in Water Mixable Oil Paint
DESCRIPTION:Many Minnesotans saw the Northern Lights this past November\, and some captured beautiful photos of the reds and greens. Why not try your hand at painting them? If you’ve never tried water-mixable oil\, you’re in for a real treat!  “Water-Mixable Oil” sounds like an oxymoron! This paint offers the benefits of oil paint with the easy clean up of soap and water instead of paint thinner. While acrylic paint dries quickly\, limiting the paint’s ability to blend smoothly\, this paint remains wet like traditional oil paint\, allowing for beautiful blending that oil painters love. We take advantage of this “open paint time” to create the glowing streaks of color in the sky and snow that looks as soft as a blanket. As usual\, this is a paint and sip style class\, so enjoy a hot beverage on us\, or bring you own favorite beverage or snack. Allow for a full 3 hours\, and prepare to leave with a tacky-wet painting. We recommend hanging your painting on a nail out of reach and just enjoy looking at it while it dries. Drying time varies with humidity levels and paint thickness. Faster than traditional oil paint\, thin layers of this paint can be dry to the touch within hours to a few days\, thicker layers can take several days to a week or more. SUMMARY:Snowman's Cardinal
DESCRIPTION:This snowman has had better days\, as he helplessly watches this cardinal steal thread from his scarf.  If you never tried painting with a pottery sponge\, you are in for a pleasant surprise! The entire background and body of this snowman is done with a pottery sponge\, resulting in a soft\, fluffy effect. We use transfer paper to apply the outline of the bird\, scarf\, hat and carrot.  You will have the option to put a smile on your snowman instead of the surprised expression\, and you can skip the pulling thread if you wish.  If you do opt for the thread\, we can help you by request– either by painting it for you or offering a brush tip marker in a coordinating color.   To achieve the depth of color in the scarf and bird\, we will be painting with 3 tones of paint\, starting with the darkest tone. Our instructor will guide you\, step by step\, to get the look!  Join us for a fun afternoon and bring home a snowman to add to your collection! We accept all skill levels. SUMMARY:Make a Yeti: A Winterfest Kids' Make n' Take
DESCRIPTION:Need a moment to warm up during Winterfest? Bring your kids over to our studio\, (between The Yellow House and Goodwill)\, between 12 & 3pm for a fun and easy make n’ take Yeti! Our Yeti is holding a heart\, perhaps to give to his valentine.  Our art instructor\, Sara\, will be there to provide assistance and show the kids how to rub white chalk over crumpled paper for an interesting texture effect. Once they have created their furry texture\, children will tear their paper along guidelines to create the shapes of their yeti. Pairs of teeth and horns cut out of white paper give this guy his “monster vibe.”  But this monster is not vicious\, he has lots of love to give! Various valentine paper will be available to personalize their yeti’s heart\, along with some heart punches to add more love to their picture. Those who like to draw can use white\, pink\, purple and blue chalk to add a wintery background for their yeti to live in.  $5 per project. This class will be rescheduled.  Exciting times! \nIn this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple landscape.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. SUMMARY:Paint a Puppy with Sara
DESCRIPTION:SCHOOL IS OUT! Calling all kids and teens 12+ let’s have some fun! Adults–feel free to join us in this paint and sip style class. An outline of the puppy is pre-drawn in advance\, so no drawing skills are necessary. While the outline is merely a guideline\, we will stay together as a group\, step by step. Painters are free to make any adjustments to make it their own. Skip the tongue or make his ears droop a little differently… it’s all up to you! This class will have an option to finish earlier\, or stay a little longer to add the extra details\, such as textured fur and additional highlights for those who want to take it to the next level. It really depends on your preference (and attention span)  🙂  )    Class time line is approximate. Bring your own favorite beverage and treats to sip/munch while you paint. We will have the Keurig on for various hot beverages. Ages 12+ please! (If under 18\, please indicate your age when purchasing a ticket\, or  call the studio to let us know after you purchase the ticket) \n$35 \nProject Description:  acrylic paint on an 8×10 stretch canvas.  Outline provided. SUMMARY:Watercolor Workshop: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes
DESCRIPTION:Ever look at a watercolor painting and think\, how did they do that? This workshop is a must for anyone who’s always wondered and wanted to try.  While each artist develops their own touch\, there are techniques every aspiring painter needs to know. \n\nIn this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple landscape.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. Ages 16+ please! \n$60-see Ticket Policy Below. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, she teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  While she enjoys teaching\, she seeks time-out to paint in the studio or outdoors. Sara struggles to isolate a single medium as a favorite. She finds enjoyment in the freedom to grab whatever medium suits her mood. This results in a variety of classes for Kicks!  In addition to teaching\,  Sara shows original works for sale at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \nHigh quality synthetic sable brushes are most recommended\, but substitutes will do. Select options designated for water color painting.  Here are some suggestions and what I will be using: \n\nPointed Rounds in #’s 4\, 8\, & 10. Try to bring at least 2 different sizes.\nFlat brush ranging from 1/2 in to 1 in width.\nScript Liner brush or a rigger brush for finer lines and details.\n\nWatercolor Paint Tubes:  I prefer to use Winsor & Newton’s professional grade line\, but I also use some student grade paints such as Grumbacher Academy or Windsor & Newton’s Cotman series. They work OK. Our main focus will be brush strokes\, but you will need a variety of colors. The colors you need depend on your subject. For my Highlander Cow\, I will be using the following: \nAt minimum: Burnt Sienna\, Raw Sienna (or Yellow Ochre)\,  Ultramarine Blue\, Quinacridone Magenta\,  Sap Green\, Cadmium Yellow light\, Payne’s Grey\, Lamp Black \nHelpful for less mixing: Raw Umber\, Violet \nOPTIONAL:  Other colors I use often:  Prussian Blue\, Permanent Rose\, Quinacridone Gold\, Cerulean Blue\, Cobalt blue\,  Lemon Yellow\, \nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, good quality paper will cause less frustration. You want 140 pound\, cold press paper. Arches Cold Press is most recommended. I have used Strathmore’s 400 series and it works OK\, but at least avoid hot press paper for this class.  If you don’t want to buy an entire block of Arches paper\,  you can buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance!
