SUMMARY:Watercolor: A Beginner's Guide to Brushstrokes Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this watercolor workshop\, Sara will be teaching various brushstroke techniques most often used in loose watercolor painting.  This workshop has a required materials list-be sure to check that out at the bottom of this page!  We will be practicing our brushstrokes with Sara’s Highlander Cow in watercolor- as seen in a previous class- as well as a simple florals.  This class is appropriate for beginners and anyone who wants to refine their skills. Be sure to bring your favorite beverages and treats!  Coffee\, tea and other hot beverages will be available.  This class is limited to 6 painters.  This is to ensure you get the most out of this workshop. Ages 16+ please!      ***Attend this workshop\, receive $10 off the watercolor class the following Saturday\, the 15th\, “Bees and Flowers”!  \n$60-see Ticket Policy Below. (Note earlier sign-up deadline) \nMeet your instructor:  Sara Porter \nSara is a local artist who grew up in the Brainerd Lakes Area. She has a Studio Art Degree from Northwestern University\, Roseville\, MN with an emphasis in oil painting. Currently\, besides teaching at Kicks since 2018\, Sara offers private lessons and teaches elementary and high school art classes to home school co-op groups. Her class sizes have varied from 4 to 28 students\, K-12.  In addition to teaching\, Sara shows original works for sale on her gallery wall at Kicks and offers pet portraits in paint or dry media\, such as colored pencil and soft pastels. When she isn’t immersed in an art related project\, she enjoys the piano\, singing\, and spending time with her family\, which has a new grandbaby to enjoy! You can find her on Facebook and Instagram under ArtistSaraPorter. \nMaterials List: \n\nSara will be using the following types of brushes in synthetic sable or brushes designated as “watercolor”:   2-3 Pointed Rounds in sizes 4\, 8 & 10\, 2 flat brushes in 1/2″ and 1 inch for larger washes\, a script liner brush or small pointed round\, or rigger. Optional: A rake brush will also be demonstrated\, you are welcome to try Sara’s if you don’t have your own. These sizes are approximate\, you do not need to have these exact sizes.\nSara will be using watercolor paint from tubes (either dry or fresh from the tube)\, but a good-quality pan set also works well. Brands include but not limited to Winsor and Newton (Cotman series) and Grumbacher.  Master’s Touch is acceptable\, available at Hobby Lobby\, but you will want to avoid the cheapest brands marketed more for children’s use.  We will most likely be using the following colors: Lemon Yellow\, Yellow Ochre\, Burnt Sienna\, Ultramarine Blue\, Cobalt Blue\, Prussian Blue\, Cadmium Red Deep\, Permanent Rose (or Quinacridone Magenta or Rose) Dioxazine Purple (or similar violet)  Sap Green\, Vandyke Brown\n\nPaper:  For the purposes of this class\, Strathmore’s 500 series is recommended over other student-grade paper. Their 400 series is available at Michaels\, but you don’t want to go lower in quality than that.  Regardless\, it’s a good idea to buy a large sheet of Arches paper (22″ x 30″) at Hobby Lobby for $8.99.  It can be torn into smaller sizes and you will see the difference in your results. \nTicket Policy: \n*No refunds \n*Sign up in advance! Ticket sales close at 8PM two nights before. Last minute inquiries\, call to check on availability. \n*Class minimum: 4 \n*In the event of not reaching the minimum\, class is subject to cancellation. \n*Cancellations by us will result in a credit towards a future class or a refund.

SUMMARY:Painting with Paper Workshop: Honey Bee
DESCRIPTION:The term “painting with paper” was first associated with artist Henry Matisse\, who would say he was “drawing with scissors.”  Since then\, paper has become much more prevalent in the world of fine art.  Since the scrap booking trend hit the scene\, we have had access to thousands of colors and patterns. Now\, mixed media art combines all the possibilities of wet and dry media into fabulous works of art. This workshop explores the endless possibilities of torn paper with a variety of materials\, including: paint\, texture applications\, stamps\, ink\, fabric/textiles.  A template of a honey bee will be used to create a “painting” out of paper. Local artist\, Sara Porter\, will demonstrate and provide hands on instruction in making a Mixed Media Honey Bee work of art. This is a two-day workshop\, Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th\, from 6-8 pm.  Space is LIMITED for this unique workshop\, so do not wait to get your ticket! The deadline to sign up is Monday night\, the 17th\, at 8 pm. See project description for more details on each night. \nAges 16+ Required \n$90 (covers both evenings\, not able to be separated) \nProject Description: \nWednesday\, Aug 19:    It all begins with creating a world for your honey bee to live in. We will spend this first night on the background and the various techniques used to create texture in a dynamic composition. Demonstrations and instructions will cover topics such as: creating a composition that’s nice to look at\, how to choose a color scheme\,  how much “stuff:” is too much\,  texture applications\, using stamps\, ink\, and paint\, the power of text in your composition\, and how to use value (lights and darks) to your advantage.   That might sound complicated\, but even if you don’t understand everything\, you”ll have our assistance and you’ll have fun “playing” with all the “stuff.”    The instructions from this first night are important to establish your overall plan for what you will do on the 2nd night. Whatever you don’t finish on Wednesday\, you will continue where you left off on Thursday.  Wet media may include: acrylic paint\, modge podge\, glue\, and ink stamps. Tools: scissors\, sandpaper\, paint brushes\, sponges\, rags\, and your hands! \nThursday\, Aug 20:  Prepare yourself for a bit of creative chaos.  It will look like art exploded in the room. And that’s partly what’s so FUN about mixed media!  We will be creating our honey bees with torn paper\, textiles and a template. Watch Sara demonstrate how she selects her colors and tears the paper to use torn edges\, which gives a “soft” effect to the image. You will have the option to make more than one bee if there’s time. \n

SUMMARY:Signboard Workshop: Red Wing Blackbird
DESCRIPTION:Paint your fall signboard before the air cools! Bring your favorite beverage and snacks if you wish\, as we paint our signboards together\, step by step. We provide a template for the bird and the cattail perch\, so no drawing skills are necessary! Our seasonal signboards are a great front door welcome for your home! See our holiday signboards in a smaller\, coordinating board– a Halloween/Thanksgiving design is coming soon! Our signboards are double-sided\, giving the option to return to our studio at another seasonal workshop to paint the other side. See Project Description below for more details! Tickets must be purchased in advance and are limited to 8\, in order to maintain comfortable working space for the signboards.
